“Arya Takes a Swim” has been Guyana’s first sea turtle children’s book produced by the EMC team. Through this exciting initiative, the story has been brought to life as an Arawak/Lokono and English audio series and audiobook. This effort is intended to raise public awareness about the four endangered sea turtles that nest in Guyana and highlight the importance of conserving their nesting habitat, the Shell Beach Protected Area.
Implemented by the EMC Foundation with support from the Sustainable Blue Economies (SBE) – Blue Social Challenge Fund (BSCF), the “Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook” project uses the power of audio to educate young people and the broader public about the sea turtles that nest in Guyana and the importance of the Shell Beach Protected Area.
Arya Takes A Swim – A Story of Friendship, Courage and Ocean Adventures
Arya, a brave green turtle hatchling, leads her diverse group of friends — Zoya, Sarah, and Felicia — on a journey from Shell Beach into the vast ocean. Together, they face challenges, form unbreakable bonds, and discover the wonders and threats lurking beneath the waves. As Arya matures, she and her friends take on a mission to protect their ocean home from threats. This heart-warming tale is a celebration of friendship, courage, and environmental stewardship, highlighting the importance of working together to safeguard the oceans and its diverse inhabitants.

Arya Takes A Swim – Audio Series and Audiobook
The “Arya Takes a Swim English and Arawak/Lokono Audio Series and Audiobooks” will serve as valuable resources for promoting literacy and language preservation, providing listeners with an engaging and immersive storytelling experience. The Arawak/Lokono version, in particular, will contribute to cultural revitalisation efforts by making the language more accessible to younger generations and broader audiences. The audio format will ensure broad access, particularly for individuals with limited internet access, visual impairments, or reading difficulties. This approach guarantees that essential information about sea turtles and marine ecosystems in Guyana reaches a wide audience.
