EMC Foundation Celebrates World Wildlife Day 2026 with the Launch of the “Saxacalli Rainforest Activity Book”

In celebration of World Wildlife Day 2026, themed “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods,” the EMC Foundation officially launched the “Saxacalli Rainforest Activity Book” at the Saxacalli Rainforest Centre. The event, celebrated with prominent personalities and enthusiastic attendees of the Saxacalli Primary School and Environmental Club, marked a significant step in promoting rainforest and biodiversity conservation and education among Guyana’s youth.

The activity book is an interactive educational resource designed to engage learners of all ages with the biodiversity of the Saxacalli rainforest. Through reading, colouring and crossword activities, the publication encourages environmental awareness and conservation-oriented thinking. By introducing children to the flora and fauna of the region, the book aims to cultivate curiosity and foster long-term connections to Guyana’s natural heritage.

The launch featured remarks from speakers who highlighted the importance of environmental education. The Minister of Education, Honourable Sonia Parag, emphasised that safeguarding natural ecosystems is integral to national development, noting that environmental stewardship protects both natural wealth and collective well-being. References were also made to the leadership of His  Excellency President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the establishment of the Global Biodiversity Alliance, that position Guyana as a global advocate for ecosystem protection.

Honourable Sonia Parag reiterated her commitment to environmental learning and youth participation in conservation initiatives. Partnerships with organisations such as the EMC Foundation have enabled the establishment and expansion of environmental clubs in schools and the integration of E-STEM programmes that combine science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with practical ecological studies. Students are introduced to modern conservation tools, including camera traps and field-based research methods, providing experiential learning opportunities that transform the rainforest into a living laboratory.

Founder and Director of the EMC Foundation, Mr. Shyam Nokta, reflected on the organisation’s longstanding relationship with the Saxacalli community and commended local educators and leaders for their dedication to sustainable development. He emphasised the importance of collaborative initiatives that empower communities to protect natural resources while fostering economic and educational growth.

Toshao Helen Williams of Saxacalli highlighted the community’s enduring connection to the rainforest and its biodiversity. She noted that traditional knowledge and sustainable practices have long guided the village’s relationship with nature. The Environmental Club, supported by the EMC Foundation’s E-STEM programme, provides young participants with opportunities for field-based learning, wildlife observation, and environmental discussions. These activities aim to cultivate environmental responsibility and awareness among the next generation.

The Toshao also underscored the role of conservation in supporting sustainable tourism and economic development. Eco-tourism initiatives that showcase Saxacalli’s biodiversity and cultural heritage create opportunities for community growth while promoting environmental protection. Visitors who engage with the rainforest gain a deeper understanding of its ecological significance and the value of Indigenous knowledge, reinforcing the importance of responsible stewardship.

A key feature of the programme was a guided trail walk along the Kokorite trail of the Saxacalli rainforest, where participants explored native plant species and their traditional and ecological benefits. The walk provided hands-on learning about medicinal and aromatic plants, an essential component of the World Wildlife Day theme, and demonstrated how these species contribute to health, cultural heritage, and sustainable livelihoods. Participants engaged in discussions about plant identification, traditional uses, and the importance of conserving forest ecosystems as reservoirs of biological and cultural knowledge.

The launch programme also featured a performance by members of the Saxacalli Environmental Club, who presented a skit rooted in themes of cultural identity and environmental stewardship. The narrative followed a father and his daughter, Hiaro, as they ventured into the rainforest to hunt. Traditionally, hunting is often depicted as a male-dominated activity, yet the skit presented a nuanced portrayal of empowerment—showing a young Indigenous girl supported by her father in learning traditional skills and ecological knowledge.

Hiaro’s journey symbolised the intersection of culture and conservation. Her name, meaning “girl” in Arawak, reflected Indigenous heritage and the importance of preserving linguistic and cultural traditions alongside environmental stewardship. When her father is bitten by a labaria snake, Hiaro relies on traditional knowledge to locate the black yari yari plant, a medicinal species used to treat the injury. Through her encounters with rainforest animals, the narrative explored ecological concepts such as biodiversity, nutrient cycles, and the interdependence of species, illustrating that human survival is intrinsically linked to the health of natural ecosystems.

The launch of the Saxacalli Rainforest Activity Book represents a collaborative achievement between the community, educators, and partners such as the EMC Foundation. The publication provides an accessible and engaging means for children and families to explore the rainforest’s biodiversity, fostering environmental awareness and pride in Guyana’s natural heritage.

By prioritising environmental education, the EMC Foundation and its partners are investing in future generations of conservation-minded citizens. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainable development and ecological preservation, ensuring that communities remain active participants in safeguarding their natural environment.

As the Saxacalli community continues to champion education and conservation, the activity book stands as a testament to the power of knowledge in shaping environmental stewardship. Through collaborative efforts, the initiative seeks to inspire a generation that values sustainability and recognises the intrinsic connection between people and nature.

EMC Foundation Hosts Farewell Celebration to Honour British High Commissioner Jane Miller

The EMC Foundation, in collaboration with Mahaica River Tours, hosted a special Farewell Celebration in honour of the British High Commissioner to Guyana, Her Excellency Jane Miller. The event celebrated her outstanding service and commitment to Guyana and marked a significant personal milestone, her twenty-fifth journey along the Mahaica River.

The Farewell Celebration was held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the Mahaica River Tours venue in Little Biaboo. The day beautifully blended nature, tourism, and celebration, reflecting a shared respect for Guyana’s people, wildlife, and waterways. Over the course of her many visits, the Mahaica region has become a deeply cherished landscape for High Commissioner Miller, shaped by years of discovery and meaningful connection.

As the attendees travelled along the Mahaica River, more than five troops of red howler monkeys were observed alongside a stunning array of vibrant birdlife. In a rare and memorable sighting, an anaconda, one of the world’s largest and heaviest snake also made an appearance, serving as a powerful reminder of the region’s extraordinary biodiversity.

Following the river excursion, the farewell celebrations continued at the Mahaica River Tours venue, where High Commissioner Miller was presented with a collection of locally crafted gifts. These included a hand-painted dress showcasing iconic Mahaica species, a custom animal-themed coaster set, jaguar-beaded earrings, and autographed EMC Foundation publications highlighting the Mahaica region.

Founder and Director of the EMC Foundation, Mr. Shyam Nokta, reflected on High Commissioner Miller’s tenure in Guyana, commending her deep appreciation for the country’s natural and cultural heritage, her genuine interest in community life, conservation, and education, and her hands-on approach to engaging with people and projects across the nation.

The EMC Foundation and the British High Commissioner in Guyana have enjoyed a long and productive partnership, resulting in several innovative projects. Through the UK Government’s Blue Social Challenge Fund Pilot, support was provided for The Visual Chronicles of the Mahaica Wetlands and Mangroves coffee table book and video series. The partnership also transformed the EMC Group’s children’s book, Arya Takes a Swim, into an audio series and audiobook in both English and Arawak.

EMC Foundation Hosts ‘Arya Takes a Swim’ Listening Session at Wakapoa Village

On August 29, 2025, the EMC Foundation proudly hosted our fifth Community Listening Session for the Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook project in the scenic Indigenous Village of Wakapoa, located in Region 2.

This exciting engagement brought together residents of all ages to enjoy Arya Takes a Swim in an immersive and meaningful way. The attendees eagerly listened to both the English and Arawak versions of the story, viewed exclusive behind-the-scenes footage on the making of the audiobook, and watched a special video snippet of the Lokono-language version.

The gathering was warmly embraced by the community and attended by the Acting Head teacher of the Primary School, Ms. Luraine Cornelius, teachers, students, community service officers, village elders and other residents.

The response was enthusiastic and heartfelt, with a few attendees expressing their excitement at hearing the Arawak language in such a creative, modern presentation. The community was also filled with pride upon seeing one of their residents, Ms. Samantha Thomas, playing a pivotal role in the development of the audio series and audiobook. The session also helped raise local awareness about sea turtle conservation and the importance of safeguarding Guyana’s diverse wildlife and habitats.

Ms. Sarah Singh, EMC Foundation’s Programme Coordinator, chaired the listening session and emphasised that Arya Takes a Swim bears an overarching message on local conservation efforts to protect the four endangered turtle species in Guyana. She explained that the story was inspired by the turtle telemetry programme conducted by Environmental Management Consultants (EMC) Inc. along the Shell Beach Protected Area. She also explained that the main character was named after Her Excellency Mrs. Arya Ali, First Lady of Guyana, to honour her dedicated advocacy for animal welfare and human rights.

Ms. Singh also highlighted that the project honours Indigenous communities and contributes to the preservation of their languages. “These communities have lived in harmony with the environment for generations, carrying deep knowledge of the land, rivers, and wildlife. However, many of these cultural traditions and languages are under threat, as fewer people are learning and speaking their Indigenous languages today.”

Acting Headmistress of the Wakapoa Primary School, Ms. Luraine Cornelius, also delivered brief remarks during the session. She extended her gratitude to the EMC Foundation for the enjoyable listening event and stressed the importance of learning one’s Native language along with staying informed on turtle conservation. “We have some EMC Foundation publications in our library which people can read and some are about Shell Beach, which is not too far from here. It was a good and cheerful session, and we got to learn about the Arawak Language and turtles.”

At the end of the session, attendees enjoyed a wonderful Turtle Conservation Exhibition, an EMC Foundation Corner which displayed key publications, and engaging turtle-themed children’s activities which included word search, crossword and colouring pages.

The Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook project was implemented by the EMC Foundation with support from the Blue Social Challenge Fund Pilot, part of the UK’s Sustainable Blue Economy Programme. On August 2, 2025, the EMC Foundation had the distinct honour of engaging with internationally acclaimed recording artist, Mr. Maxi Priest, during his visit to St. Cuthbert’s Mission (Pakuri), the only Indigenous community found in region 4: Demerara-Mahaica.

The visit followed the Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook Community Listening Session at the Village Benab, where the EMC Foundation team supported the community in welcoming Mr. Maxi Priest and showcasing the rich culture of St. Cuthbert’s Mission.

As part of the engagement, EMC Foundation Program Coordinator, Ms. Sarah Singh, warmly welcomed Mr. Maxi Priest and presented the EMC Foundation publications, ‘Ollie the Otter’s River Adventures,’ and ‘Hidden Gems of the Mahaica River,’ along with a handcrafted giant river otter balata figurine. At the time, the artist was exploring Guyana’s diverse landscapes and wildlife, immersing himself in the country’s natural beauty.

During the short programme, Mr. Maxi Priest, a British artist with Jamaican ancestry, expressed his deep appreciation for Guyana’s warm hospitality and captivating scenery, while emphasising the importance of preserving the environment. He also autographed a copy of the EMC Foundation coffee table book, ‘Visual Chronicles of the Mahaica Wetlands and Mangroves,’ a gesture that was greatly appreciated and will be treasured.

Prior to this engagement, the British High Commissioner to Guyana, H.E. Jane Miller, OBE, and British High Commission Programme Manager, Ms. Kassia De Santos, had presented Mr. Maxi Priest with a copy of the ‘Visual Chronicles of the Mahaica Wetlands and Mangroves’ coffee table book. EMC Foundation Hosts ‘Arya Takes a Swim’ Listening Session at Pakuri

On August 2, 2025, the EMC Foundation proudly hosted the second Community Listening Session for the Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook project in the culturally rich village of St. Cuthbert’s Mission (Pakuri), located in the Mahaica region.

This special event brought together residents of all ages to experience Arya Takes a Swim in an immersive and meaningful way. Attendees listened to both the English and Arawak versions of the story, viewed exclusive behind-the-scenes footage on the making of the audiobook, and enjoyed a special video snippet of the Arawak-language version.

The event was warmly welcomed by the community and attended by Toshao Mr. Alvoro Simon, the St. Cuthbert’s Secondary Environmental Club Coordinator, Ms. Michelle Schuman, Village Elder and Previous Toshao, Mr. Leeland Clenkian, teachers, students and other village representatives.

The response from the community was enthusiastic and deeply emotional. St. Cuthbert’s Mission is one of the many villages where Arawak is spoken, and for many, hearing the Arawak language in a creative, modern format was both exciting and inspiring. The session also strengthened local awareness about sea turtle conservation and the importance of protecting local wildlife and ecosystems.

Ms. Sarah Singh, Program Coordinator of the EMC Foundation, delivered remarks during the session, highlighting that the Arya Takes a Swim story is a broader conservation message that reflects years of conservation work aimed at protecting Guyana’s four sea turtle species.

She explained that the story draws from turtle telemetry activities conducted by Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC) along the Shell Beach Protected Area, and that the main character’s name honours Her Excellency Mrs. Arya Ali, First Lady of Guyana, who is a strong advocate for both animal welfare and human rights.

Sarah also noted that this project honours Indigenous communities and helps to preserve their language. “These communities have lived in harmony with the environment for generations, carrying deep knowledge of the land, rivers, and wildlife. However, many of these cultural traditions and languages are under threat, as fewer people are learning and speaking their Indigenous languages today.”

Also providing remarks was the Toshao of St. Cuthbert’s Mission, Mr. Alvoro Simon, who commended the work that the EMC Group has been doing in the community for the past few years. These include research, its E-STEM Program with environmental clubs, environmental monitoring, support for livelihood projects, educational publications, and a variety of innovative outreach initiatives.

He noted, “We’ve been very grateful, the club would know Sarah and the team here as they come here often and are very knowledgeable. They’re very insightful into the stuff that they do here in the village. And we trust them. At our end, it is exactly what we need right now. As our country, as our world, for a matter of fact, it becomes more modern and much more sophisticated and much more technological, we need to conserve what we have here”.

Mr. Simon also explained how his community has been influenced by other coastal communities, and with this, fewer residents are speaking their native tongue, Arawak or Lokono. To this end, he announced that they will be launching a new educational programme, in which the Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook project played a major role.

He proudly stated, “As of the new term, we will be creating a programme where we will be teaching the Arawak language in the schools. So, as you guys will return to school in September, we’ll start formulating a plan where we can teach it in schools.  And, of course, as we have seen from this and our experimental experience with this project, your children can definitely learn faster than some adults.

The event extended beyond just listening. It featured an engaging Turtle Conservation Exhibition, and EMC Foundation Corner showcasing the organisation’s key publications, and fun turtle-themed activity and colouring pages for children.

Through interactive events like this, the EMC Foundation continues to bridge the gap between conservation, culture, and community. By blending storytelling, science, and Indigenous voices, the Foundation remains committed to protecting Guyana’s biodiversity while celebrating its rich linguistic and cultural heritage.

EMC Foundation Hosts ‘Arya Takes a Swim’ Listening Session at Saxacalli

On July 17, 2025, the EMC Foundation proudly hosted the first Community Listening Session for the Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook project in the vibrant village of Saxacalli, located along the Essequibo River.

This milestone event brought together both children and adults to experience the story in a new and immersive way. Attendees listened to both the English and Arawak versions of Arya Takes a Swim, viewed behind-the-scenes videos on the making of the project, and were treated to a special video snippet of the audiobook in Arawak. The event was also attended by Toshao Ms. Helen Williams, Environmental Club Coordinator Ms. Shanice Wilson, and other teachers from the village. Ms. Helen expressed her gratitude to the EMC Foundation for hosting the activity in the community.

The response from the community was enthusiastic and heartfelt. Many attendees expressed their excitement at hearing the Arawak language for the first time, while also gaining a deeper appreciation for sea turtle conservation efforts in Guyana.

The activity also provided a valuable opportunity for villagers to share their knowledge and experiences related to both the Arawak language and marine turtle conservation. Some residents recalled past sightings of turtles near Saxacalli, and a few shared that they had even rescued and released turtles that had come ashore in the area. These personal stories added a meaningful layer to the session, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in conservation and cultural preservation.

During the event, Ms. Sarah Singh, Program Coordinator of the EMC Foundation, shared insights into the project’s purpose and impact. “Arya Takes a Swim is more than just a children’s story; it represents decades of work to protect and conserve the four species of sea turtles found in Guyana,” Sarah noted.

She explained that the story was inspired by turtle telemetry exercises conducted by Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC) along the Shell Beach Protected Area, and that the main character’s name was chosen in honour of Her Excellency Mrs. Arya Ali, First Lady of Guyana, a passionate advocate for animal and human rights.

Sarah also emphasised the project’s cultural significance, particularly its contribution to language preservation. “With the audiobook translated into Arawak, one of Guyana’s nine Indigenous languages, this project supports efforts to revitalise a language that is at risk of fading,” Sarah added.

The event offered more than just listening. It was a fully educational and interactive experience. Attendees explored the Turtle Conservation Exhibition, visited the EMC Foundation Corner featuring the organisation’s publications, and enjoyed fun, turtle-themed colouring and activity pages designed especially for younger participants.

Waste to Wonder with EMC Foundation

On Saturday, June 28, 2025, the EMC Foundation partnered with the Scout Association of Guyana to host a ‘Waste to Wonder’ activity. Hosted at the Scout Association’s headquarters on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, the indoor, hands-on session brought together over 20 Cub Scouts, aged 7 to 11, for a morning of creativity, collaboration, and environmental learning.

Designed to promote recycling and environmental responsibility, the ‘Waste to Wonder’ activity showed young participants how everyday items such as plastic bottles, cans, newspapers, and CDs that are usually discarded can be repurposed into something useful and meaningful. The session aimed to inspire sustainable habits, encourage creative thinking, and make environmental education fun and interactive.

In preparation for the event, EMC Foundation staff collected recyclable materials, which were then used as the primary tools for the day’s activities. During the session, Cub Scouts were divided into five groups, each guided by a member of the EMC Foundation team. The groups collaborated to transform the collected materials into recycled plant pots, learning along the way about waste reduction, the value of recycling, and how small actions can help protect the environment.

Each group participated in a reflection and presentation segment, where they showcased their creations and shared insights from the experience. This closing activity not only reinforced what they had learned but also encouraged public speaking, teamwork, and a sense of pride in their efforts.

To further promote environmental stewardship, each Cub Scout received carrot seeds and soil for their recycled pots, encouraging them to nurture their creation at home and continue their journey of caring for the environment.

The EMC Foundation was proud to support this activity, which aligns with its core focus on education, environmental awareness, and E-STEM capacity building. The event also represents one of the ways the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the EMC Foundation and the Scout Association of Guyana is being implemented, fostering positive change and environmental consciousness among Guyana’s youth.

EMC Foundation Celebrates the Launch of “Ollie the Otter’s River Adventures” in a Stellar Event

On May 28, 2025, the EMC Foundation unveiled “Ollie the Otter’s Rivers Adventures,” a captivating children’s book, at the Umana Yana in Georgetown. The event, celebrated with prominent personalities and enthusiastic attendees, marked a significant step in promoting giant river otter conservation and education among Guyana’s youth.

The “Ollie the Otter’s River Adventures” book introduces young readers to Ollie, a spirited and curious giant river otter. It was inspired by the vibrant ecosystems and diverse biodiversity of the Mahaica River, and aims to nurture a love for nature and awareness of otter conservation among children and families.

This launch, held in celebration of World Otter Day, brought together a range of speakers who shared their insights and praised the initiative. The Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Hon. Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Anthony Phillips, highlighted the impactful and collective effort behind the book, which aims to support the mission of raising environmental and educational awareness.

The Prime Minister stated, “This storybook being launched today is a vital part of that mission. It brings biodiversity into the classroom, the home, the hearts and minds of our young people—because no strategy can be successful if our citizens are not well informed. We cannot secure our future if our children are not inspired.”

He also commended the EMC Group for their work to date and expressed his anticipation for future publications and more innovative, groundbreaking projects that support Guyana’s mission of environmental conservation and awareness.

Mr. Shyam Nokta, Founder and Director of the EMC Foundation, reflected on the book’s inception and its focus on the ecological richness of the Mahaica Watershed, as well as the challenges facing giant river otters.

He noted that a collaborative approach is key to tackling many of the threats facing giant river otters and other species, stating, “With the efforts we’re undertaking now with Ollie, another endangered giant, we’re able to bring together partners, communities, researchers, universities, Government agencies, as well as sponsors and donors—so that we can advance otter conservation to the next level.”

Indranee Roopsind, a Guyanese Otter Specialist with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), emphasised the significant role the publication will play in ushering in a new era of awareness and conservation for giant river otters, particularly among children.

She stated, “This collaborative effort, and the incredible work the EMC Foundation is doing, is already making—and will continue to make—a meaningful impact on giant river otter conservation, not just in Guyana but across the region. This book, which features a giant river otter along the Mahaica River, is a powerful conservation tool that blends sound science, local knowledge, and partnerships through storytelling—an effective medium that reaches audiences of all ages.”

Melanie McTurk, Project Coordinator of the Karanambu Trust, which has led giant river otter conservation efforts in the Rupununi for decades and recently partnered with the EMC Foundation,  also spoke at the event. She provided important historical context on the decline of giant river otter populations and the pivotal role Karanambu Trust and Rupununi residents have played in their rehabilitation and reintroduction.

She remarked, “Giant River otters are one of our national treasures. In order to effectively design the interventions needed for their long-term survival, we must work together. We need mechanisms that not only help us understand the challenges but also allow us to find collaborative ways to protect giant river otters, safeguard our communities, and serve our people.”

Following the launch, “Ollie the Otter’s River Adventures” the EMC Foundation will engage the Ministry of Education on having copies of the book available to schools across Guyana.

EMC Foundation extends its gratitude to all the speakers, attendees, and supporters who contributed to the success of the launch. Special thanks are extended to all partners and collaborators for their support and dedication to otter conservation.

The First Lady added that the audiobook addresses causes close to her heart, including environmental protection, youth empowerment, and literacy. She noted that the project is a beautiful example of what can be achieved when Government, non-governmental organisations, and international partners work together.

Additionally, British High Commissioner, H.E. Jane Miller, underscored the British High Commission’s support for projects like Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook, stating, “We’ve really enjoyed our collaboration with the EMC Foundation—a great example of a catalytic and innovative project that brings Guyana’s beauty and the blue economy to life, and highlights the importance of a sustainable and healthy ocean environment.”

Founder and Director of the EMC Foundation, Mr. Shyam Nokta, in his remarks, highlighted that Arya Takes a Swim—Guyana’s first children’s book on turtle tagging—is once again making waves, as the first Arawak children’s audiobook on marine turtle conservation in Guyana. He also expressed excitement for future projects aligned with the Foundation’s mission of raising environmental awareness through education.

Mr. Nokta noted, “We obviously would like to continue to take this initiative forward. Our dream is to see this audio series featured on the Ministry of Education’s channel so it can be accessed by communities across the country. We also hope to see Arya Takes a Swim available in Arawak in schools and Indigenous communities throughout Guyana.”

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of the Protected Areas Commission (PAC), Mr. Fitzroy Sealey, shared updates on turtle conservation efforts in Guyana, noting encouraging trends in nesting and hatchlings at the Shell Beach Protected Area. He commended the EMC Foundation and Environmental Management Consultants Inc. for their vital role in the Turtle Telemetry Programme and expressed the PAC’s eagerness for future collaborations.

Further, Toshao of St. Cuthbert’s Mission, Mr. Alvoro Simon, offered insights into the community’s cultural and conservation efforts, emphasising how pivotal a project like this is in preserving Indigenous languages. He shared that his community has faced challenges in maintaining their language, but with plans to teach it in schools, this project will play a vital role in that initiative.

The Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook project was implemented by the EMC Foundation with support from the Blue Social Challenge Fund Pilot, part of the UK’s Sustainable Blue Economy Programme. It is part of the EMC Foundation’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and foster a collective commitment to marine turtle conservation in Guyana.

Arya Takes a Swim Audio Series and Audiobook is inspired by the real-life Turtle Telemetry Program at Shell Beach and follows the journey of a green turtle named Arya. Through immersive narration and rich sound design, the series encourages children and families across the country to explore and protect the marine environment—making marine conservation more accessible, engaging, and inspiring for all.

Promoting Otter Conservation and Environmental Awareness: The EMC Foundation and the Karanambu Trust sign historic MoU

The EMC Foundation and the Karanambu Trust have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, February 28, 2025, in an innovative move to officially formalize their collaboration on education, awareness, monitoring and conservation actions with focus on Giant River Otters. This partnership will see joint initiatives being developed and implemented to protect Giant River Otters and their habitat through awareness and preservation actions.

This MOU Signing coincides with World Wildlife Day 2025, being observed under the theme “Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet” and marks a significant boost in the conservation efforts for Giant River Otters- one of Guyana’s endangered species.

Through this partnership, both non-profit organizations will augment each other’s capabilities and benefit from access to knowledge and expertise, strategic networking, fundraising, and implementation capabilities.

There also exists major potential for boosting environmental awareness through the EMC Foundation’s E-STEM Programme and our 19 Environmental Clubs across Guyana’s coast and the numerous Wildlife Clubs in the Rupununi that the Karanambu Trust supports.

Founder and Director of the EMC Foundation, Mr. Shyam Nokta during the MoU signing expressed his excitement about this partnership. “We are excited to collaborate with you to see how we can bridge this gap between the coast and the hinterland and more so how we can collaborate on raising awareness on Giant River Otters and boosting efforts at the local level- working with communities, school children and with other stakeholders to not just raise awareness but to influence conservation actions.”

Project Coordinator of the Karanambu Trust, Ms. Melanie McTurk, also shared similar sentiments. “Our reputation as the pioneers of Giant Otter research and conservation in Guyana but of course our work has expanded beyond that.  We also do a lot of work with communities and especially in the community tourism sphere… So, we are very excited to be partnering with you and be able to hopefully to take that influence beyond the realms of the Rupununi.”
