Ollie’s Epic Journey of Discovery, Friendship, and the Hidden Wonders of the Mahaica River!

Ollie the Otter’s River Adventure” follows the journey of a curious giant river otter named Ollie who lives in the Mahaica River. As Ollie travels from St. Cuthbert’s Mission (Pakuri Village), past Little Biaboo and all the way to the mouth of the Mahaica River in Unity Village, he encounters wildlife and people, learning about the environment and its inhabitants.

Authored by EMC Foundation’s Shyam Nokta and Stella Madete, and brought to life through the illustrations of Guyanese artist Roberto Teekah and graphic designer Sheridan Frank, this book aims to spark curiosity and instill a sense of responsibility in the younger generation toward otter conservation.

Safeguarding the Future of the Mahaica Watershed

The Mahaica Watershed is home to a diverse range of species, including the lukanani fish, giant river otters, jaguars, and over 150 bird species including Guyana’s national bird, the Canje pheasant. This ecosystem plays a critical role in sustaining biodiversity, combating climate change, and ensuring clean water, while also being key to the region’s culture, economy, and environment.

However, the watershed is increasingly threatened by climate change, pollution, and conflicting land uses. The EMC Foundation is working to protect this fragile ecosystem through initiatives such as biodiversity assessments, water quality monitoring and supporting livelihood opportunities. Additionally, the Foundation promotes educational programs with environmental clubs in the villages as a way to encourage environmental responsibility among young people.
