On September 11, 2026, the EMC Foundation visited the De Hoop Primary Environmental Club for an interactive session introducing club members to camera traps and their role in wildlife monitoring and environmental conservation.
The session was facilitated by Projects Assistant, Caren Wilfred, and supported by Sarah Singh, Program Coordinator; Sasha Singh and Cherise Roberts, Projects Assistants; and Trevor Emanuel, Driver and Field Assistant.
The activity began with an environmental-themed version of the popular “Dog and the Bone” game, led by Sasha with support from Caren. The game provided a fun and energetic introduction to some of the animals found in Guyana while encouraging club members to learn through play.
The club members then took part in a hands-on camera-trap activity. They learned about the different components of a camera trap, how the equipment works and why it is used for wildlife monitoring. Club members had the opportunity to examine the equipment, help identify a suitable location and assist with setting up the camera trap.
To demonstrate how camera traps capture wildlife, the club members pretended to be different animals and walked in front of the camera, showing how movement can trigger the equipment. The activity sparked plenty of curiosity, with club members asking thoughtful questions about camera traps and how they are used to study wildlife.
The club members later reviewed footage previously captured by EMC Foundation camera traps in the Mahaica Watershed. They enthusiastically identified animals they recognised, while Sarah helped them identify unfamiliar species and learn more about the wildlife captured on camera.
The session concluded with closing remarks from Caren, who thanked Ms. Bibi and the club members for welcoming the EMC Foundation team and participating enthusiastically throughout the activities.
The visit provided club members with an engaging introduction to wildlife monitoring while demonstrating how technology can be used to explore, document and better understand Guyana’s rich biodiversity. Through hands-on learning and interaction, the club members gained a greater appreciation for the role they can play in understanding and protecting the natural environment.
The EMC Foundation’s E-STEM Program is supported by the ExxonMobil Foundation.

The EMC Foundation was established by Mr. Shyam Nokta, winner of the 2022 Anthony N Sabga Award for Entrepreneurship. The Foundation works to support environmental awareness and education in Guyana by promoting activities which encourage a greater understanding of the environment, creating a network to connect like-minded persons, and providing opportunities to experience Guyana’s rich natural environment.
